122 hospitalized due to Cyclospora outbreak in Texas

Via Xinhua :

" A total of 122 Cyclospora cases have been confirmed in the U.S. state of Texas in July in its latest outbreak, local media reported Wednesday.

Cyclospora, a rare parasite, is the main cause for patients who suffered severe stomaches across Texas, local TV channel KHOU said.

It is a typical foodborne disease and can sometimes be contracted from drinking contaminated water, the report said.

Doctors said it doesn't take much to make someone sick. The patient will often suffer lengthy stomach pains including diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite and a low-grade fever.

They said it is fairly simple to treat with antibiotics but can be difficult to track. Health officials in Texas are investigating the source of the growing stomach bug.

According to KHOU, Cyclospora is reaching out beyond Texas with hundreds of cases across the country. Two states, Iowa and Nebraska, have tracked the parasite to some prepackaged salad mixes."
