US : Tompkins warns of rise in Lyme disease cases

Article via Ithaca Journal, excerpt :

" Tompkins County is now considered an endemic area for Lyme disease, according to the county Health Department.

The Tompkins County Health Department released a report that said Lyme disease is on the rise in the county. In 2006, there were two cases in the county. In 2010, there were 70. So far in 2011, there have been 14 cases of Lyme disease and 28 probable cases, according to the health department.

"Anybody who spends anytime outside is at risk," community health nurse supervisor Karen Bishop said. "We now have a much higher number of deer ticks here that are infected, so everyone is more susceptible to get infected."
