IAEA:Radiation 1,600 times normal in Fukushima

Via NHK News :

" Radiation 1,600 times higher than normal levels has been detected in an area about 20 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency says its team of experts measured radiation in the air and soil at 11 locations in Fukushima Prefecture.

In the town of Namie, at a point 20 kilometers northwest from the nuclear power plant, the data showed radiation levels of 161 microsieverts per hour as of 2:55 PM on Sunday. That's 1,600 times higher than the IAEA's normal standard of 0.1 microsieverts per hour found in nature.

At 2:31 PM on Sunday, 83 microsieverts per hour was observed at an office of Ogaki Dam in the same town, 16 kilometers from the nuclear power plant.

Namie Town lies at the border of the 20 kilometer exclusion zone around the Fukushima reactors. At 9:47 PM on Sunday, 11.2 microsieverts per hour was observed at the office of Katsura Village, 29 kilometers from the nuclear power plant.

The agency says figures can change depending on wind direction and the time of day."
