H5N2 bird flu reported at poultry farm in southern Taiwan

Via Focus Taiwan :

" An outbreak of low-pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza is unfolding at a chicken farm in Sikou township in southern Taiwan's Chiayi County, a local animal disease control official said Tuesday. The infection was detected in an annual routine disease surveillance program, said Wong Yo-chu, director of the Animal Disease Control Center under the Chiayi county government.

No clinical symptoms were seen in any of the chickens at the black-feather stud poultry farm, Wong said."The holding has been confined and disinfected, " said Wong, adding that his agency has already imposed a ban on the movement of the roughly 5,000 chicken studs on the farm to prevent the virus from spreading.

The center will closely monitor the 46 other poultry farms within a 3-kilometer radius of the site for three months, Wong said.Asked about the strain of virus detected in the poultry, Wong said the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture has yet to finalize a complete examination report."
