Trinidad and Tobago : Govt confirms dengue death

An article from News Day :

" The Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed the first dengue-related death for the year, while it is investigating a second death allegedly due to dengue.

This was announced yesterday by Minister of Health Therese Baptiste-Cornelis, at a press conference at the Health Ministry, Park Street, Port-of-Spain. The Health Minister also disclosed a new strain of the dengue virus appears to be emerging locally.

Not referring to her by name, Baptiste-Cornelis stated that Tricia Seuraj’s death has been “confirmed as a result of dengue.” Seuraj, 39, died on January 31 at the St Clair Medical Centre. It was believed Seuraj was the country’s first dengue death for the year, although this was not declared by the Public Health Laboratory of the ministry, which is responsible for doing confirmatory tests.

The ministry had said the St Clair Medical Centre did not report the dengue case to the ministry, however, doctors at the institution denied this, saying they did report that Seuraj died from “complications of suspected dengue infection.”
