You know it's a serious issue when you read a directive like this from the Health Minister. An article from The Star :
" ALOR GAJAH: All doctors must now notify health authorities of suspected cases of leptospirosis, which has caused the death of 10 people since July.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the ministry's directive would enable authorities to identify the cause of the spread of leptospirosis for preventive measures to be taken.
"When we are able to identify the source of the bacteria, then measures can be taken to control it, including cleaning up works, gotong-royong and closure of the affected place if necessary," Liow told reporters here Monday, after launching the new pre-school and special education building at SJKC Machap Umboo with Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.
Liow said health officers also needed to identify leptospirosis hot spots to help control the spread of the bacteria.
He urged the public, especially campers and jungle-trekkers, to beware of personal hygiene and keep their surroundings clean so as not to attract rats."
